Performing Ghusl with plaited hair

Question and Answer:

 

Q. Does a woman have to open her plaited hair every time she makes Ghusal? It becomes hard to do it all the time with all the chores in the house. Please advise.

 

A. If a woman’s hair is plaited, she is exempted from unplaiting her hair as long as water reaches the roots of her hair (scalp) during Ghusal. However, if water does not reach the roots of her plaited hair during Ghusal, she will have to unplait her hair and wet her scalp and hair. (Shaami 1/153)

How would we know whether water has reached the roots or not?

The scalp has to be wet...not all the hair. So  you pour water over the head making sure the whole scalp is wet

I posted this Q/A because many women think the "roots" of the hair is the end part of the hair

So if the scalp is wet but some of the hairs remain dry, ghusl will still be valid?

You mean the hair in the plait?

Most of the hair in the plait will remain dry as its not unplaited

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate

From Sidi Faraz’s forthcoming book, The Essentials of Hanafi Fiqh:

 

“It is not necessary for a woman to undo her braids or ensure that water reaches all of her braided hair as long as it reaches the roots of her hair on her head.”

Thus, the rules for ghusl are the same in this case – water must reach the roots of your hair, if this is accomplished ghusl is valid.

this question is regarding the ghusl of women and washing the hair, I am aware that if a woman has a plait in her hair then it is necessary for the roots to be washed, without opening the plait, is ghusl still counted if the plait is left dry and only the roots are washed?

 

Answer

 

If water reached the roots of the plaits of the hair, that is sufficient even though the plaited hair remains dry. However it is advisable to make water reach the plaited hair. [1]

Q: What is the fatwa concerning women with long thick hair in the state of janaabah (impurity)?

A: When taking a Ghusl (bath), it will be compulsory to wet all the hair and to ensure that water has also reached the roots of the hair. If this is not done, the Ghusl will not be valid.

 

If the woman’s hair is tied into plaits then it is not compulsory upon her to open the plaits and wet the hair when bathing. She must just ensure that water reaches the roots of her hair. However, hair that is already loose at the time of Ghusl must be washed completely. Failing to do so will render the Ghusl invalid.
