A to Z of Eclipses in Islam

 

 

 

[41:37] Among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate yourselves to the sun, or to the moon. And prostrate yourselves to Allah who has created them, if it is Him whom you worship.

 

 

Background:

 

This Friday (20^th of March 2015) will see a Total Solar Eclipse in Svalbard (Norway) and the Faroe Islands, and a Partial Solar Eclipse in Europe, northern and eastern Asia and northern and western Africa. The eclipse starts at 07:41 UTC and ends at 11:50 UTC with the best time to view it around 08:30 UTC.

 

We (as) Muslims are meant to view any phenomenon no matter how grand and spectacular from the eyes of Qur’aan and Sunnah. Media is constantly emphasizing the spectacular views to be displayed this week but we want to emphasize the CREATOR of the spectacle and the key lessons HE wants us to take from eclipses.

 

Focus on the Creator & not the created!

 

The sun and the moon are fantastic, magnificent creations which dazzle us from the time we first lift our gaze to the heavens. We are in awe of their majesty and gaze at them all our lives in astonishment and amazement. But the questions we should be asking are who created them and how magnificent HE must be?

 

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ ضِيَآءً۬ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ نُورً۬ا وَقَدَّرَهُ ۥ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعۡلَمُواْ عَدَدَ ٱلسِّنِينَ وَٱلۡحِسَابَ‌ۚ مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٲلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۚ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡأَيَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمٍ۬ يَعۡلَمُونَ

 

[10:5] He is the One who has made the sun a glow, and the moon a light, and determined for it stages, so that you may learn the number of the years, and the calculation (of time). Allah has not created all this but for a rightful purpose. He elaborates the signs for a people who understand.

 

The magnificence, majesty, grandeur actually belongs to the CREATOR! If His creation dazzles us and leaves us amazed all our lives than isn’t he truly who should be admired and worshipped?

 

وَمِنۡ ءَايَـٰتِهِ ٱلَّيۡلُ وَٱلنَّهَارُ وَٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ‌ۚ لَا تَسۡجُدُواْ لِلشَّمۡسِ وَلَا لِلۡقَمَرِ وَٱسۡجُدُواْ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَهُنَّ إِن ڪُنتُمۡ إِيَّاهُ تَعۡبُدُونَ

On Friday 20th March 2015 a solar eclipse is going to occur. The eclipse will begin at around 8.30am GMT. To understand the Islāmic viewpoint of solar eclipse and what to do when it occurs, please read the following article written by the respected Shaykh-ul-Hadīth, Shaykh Mawlānā Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullāh.

 

 

SOLAR ECLIPSE

Abū Bakrah radhiyallāhu ‘anhu relates: “We were with Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam when the sun eclipsed. The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam stood up dragging his cloak¹ till he entered the masjid. We also entered. He sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam led us in a two raka’āt salāh till the eclipse cleared. Then the Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam said, ‘The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of anyone’s death.² So whenever you see these (eclipses), perform salāh and make du’ā until the eclipse is cleared.’” (Al-Bukhārī)

 

¹ This indicated urgency.

²  Prior to the advent of Islām, it was a widely held belief in Arab society that eclipse would occur upon the death of a great personality. The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam had a son named Ibrāhīm radhiyallāhu ‘anhu who passed away in infancy, on the same day as a solar eclipse. The Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam dispelled this false notion.

 

WHAT TO DO AT THE TIME OF SOLAR ECLIPSE

...So whenever you see these (eclipses), offer salāh and make du‘ā till the eclipse has cleared. (Al-Bukhārī)

...So when you see the eclipse, make du’ā to Allāh and say takbīr, perform salāh and give sadaqah... (Al-Bukhārī)

...He (the Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) went to the Masjid (on the occasion of solar eclipse) and offered the salāh with the longest qiyām, rukū‘ and sujūd that I had ever seen him doing. (Al-Bukhārī)

 

From the ahādīth above we learn that we should engage in:

 

1) salāh;         

2) du‘ā;           

3) rememberance of Allāh ta‘ālā; and

4) spend in causes that bring the Pleasure of Allāh ta‘ālā.

 

It is sunnah to perform two raka’āt salāh with congregation which is to be led by the imām of jumu‘ah salāh or any imām of the masjid. It is sunnah to perform this salāh with qiyām, rukū‘ and sujūd that are long.

 

After the salāh the congregation should engage in du‘ā which should last until the eclipse clears.

 

Mas’alah: Adhān or iqāmah will not be called for this salāh. Announcements can be made to gather the people.

 

Mas’alah: If whilst engaged in du‘ā the time for a fard salāh commences, then du‘ā should be concluded and fard salāh should be performed.

 

During such occasions we must not remain neglectful. Many people are more keen to witness the eclipse, rather than following the teachings of our beloved Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam. 

 

May Allāh ta‘ālā grant us the tawfīq to turn to Him during such moments in light of the teachings of our Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam.

Superstitions regarding Pregnant Women and the Solar/Lunar Eclipse

Assalaamualaikum I am 2 months pregnant and have been hearing many things about what I should and shouldn’t do at the time of the eclipse. Most people have been telling my husband and I that the eclipse will have a detrimental effect on our child if i do anything, including housework & normal work. Please advise as to what the Hadith says in this regard Jazakallah

 

Answer

It is superstitious to believe your actions during the eclipse will effect your child.

Question

Please let me know what virtues or traditions should a pregnant woman follow during the time of solar or lunar eclipses? Some people say that she should not go outside home, should not cut any vegetables and donate the clothes she wore on that day. Please clarify whether such beliefs are incorrect or false?

Answer

(Fatwa: 1226/1226/M=1432)

One should offer salah during solar and lunar eclipses and should get oneself busy in dua etc. The same ruling is for a pregnant woman as well. A woman should not come out of her home without a need, but it is not prohibited due to kusuf and khusuf. Preventing her from cutting vegetables and giving in charity the worn clothes is baseless and nonsense. It is not right to have such belief.

To understand the Islamic viewpoint of a solar eclipse and what to do when it occurs, please read the following article of the respected Shaykh-ul-Hadīth, Hadrat Mawlānā Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullāh. 

 

You can also listen to some advices the respected Shaykh imparted prior to the solar eclipse in 2015.

 

Note: In the UK, as the eclipse will be occurring between 'Asr and Maghrib, the salāh at the time of an eclipse will not be performed however, everyone is encouraged to engage in the other a'māl mentioned below.

Lunar Eclipse

On Friday 27th July 2018 a lunar eclipse is going to occur. In the UK, the eclipse will begin before Maghrib and last until 12:28am; the total eclipse being from 9:21pm until 10:13pm. To understand the Islamic viewpoint of an eclipse and what to do when it occurs, please read the following article written by Shaykh-ul-Hadīth, Hadrat Mawlānā Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullāh.

¹ This indicated urgency.

Mas’alah: Two raka’āt salāh are Sunnah at the time of a lunar eclipse. However, congregation is not Sunnah for this salāh. The people should offer this salāh individually and engage in du‘ā and the rememberance of Allāh ta‘ālā.

Mas’alah: If whilst engaged in salāh or du‘ā the time for a fard salāh commences, then one should conclude and perform the fard salāh.

Note: During such occasions we must not remain neglectful. Many people are more keen to witness the eclipse, rather than following the teachings of our beloved Nabī sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam. 

May Allāh ta‘ālā grant us the tawfīq to turn to Him during such moments according to the teachings of our beloved Nabī sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam.
