Unable to fast due to diabetes

Q: My father has diabetes. Is it fardh to fast in Ramadhan while he was advised bydoctors to avoid fasting?

 

 

 

A: If your father is​ unable to observe the fast, then he should discharge fidyah on behalf of each fast missed.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

( وللشيخ الفاني العاجز عن الصوم الفطر ويفدي ) وجوبا ولو في أول الشهر وبلا تعدد فقير كالفطرة لو موسرا وإلا فيستغفر الله هذا إذا كان الصوم أصلا بنفسه

قال الشامي : قوله ( العاجز عن الصوم ) أي عجزا مستمرا كما يأتي أما لو لم يقدر عليه لشدة الحر كان له أن يفطر ويقضيه في الشتاء فتحقوله ( ويفدي وجوبا ) لأن عذره ليس بعرضى للزوال حتى يصير إلى القضاء فوجبت الفدية نهرثم عبارة الكنز وهو يفدي إشارة إلى أنه ليس على غيره الفداء لأن نحو المرض والسفر في عرضة الزوال فيجب القضاء وعند العجز بالموت تجب الوصية بالفدية قوله ( ولو في أول الشهر ) أي يخير بين دفعها في أوله أو آخره كما في البحر (رد المحتار 2/ 427)

Main point is that it is not “automatic” that every diabetic person is unable to fast. The person should only miss fasts if there is fear of the diabetes (or any illness) increasing or in the case of diabetes, there is fear of the person suffering a hypo. See below:

 

Regarding illness, the great Hanafi jurist, Imam al-Haskafi (Allah have mercy on him) states in the chapter of “excuses that permit not to fast” in his excellent work Durr al-Mukhtar:

 

“(It is permissible not to fast) for an individual who is ill and fears that his/her illness will increase, or a healthy person who fears that he will become ill due to fasting.” (Radd al-Muhtar ala al-Durr al-Mukhtar, 2/422)
