  1. «The beneficial gift is a statement a man gifts to his Muslim brother.»— Imam Ibn ul-Qayyim (rahimahullah)
  2. «Losing time is harder than death, as losing time keeps you away from Allah and the Hereafter, while death keeps you away from the worldly life and your people.»— Imam Ibn ul-Qayyim (rahimahullah)
  3. Woman in Islam: Role as Mother (Status of Mother in Islam, Muslim Mother, Islamic Mother) Apart from her role as a wife, the Muslim woman has a very important role as mother. The status and value attached to parents in the Muslim world is very high. A woman becomes complete when she becomes a mother. Enjoying her power of creativity and grade of superiority over man, she experiences those precious feelings and senses, which nature gives only to woman. There is no doubt that as a mother, she is superior to man and is the nucleus of her family! Noble Qur'an says: "And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) "Ugh" nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word. And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: O my Lord! Have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) little." Noble Qur'an (17:23-24) Again Noble Qur'an says: And We have enjoined man in respect of his parents - his mother bears him with faintings upon faintings and his weaning takes two years - saying: Be grateful to Me and to both your parents; to Me is the eventual coming. And if they contend with you that you should associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them, and keep company with them in this world kindly, and follow the way of him who turns to Me, then to Me is your return, then will I inform you of what you did. Noble Qur'an (31:14-15) In Islam every day is Mother's Day (Status of Mother in Islam) One day a man came to see the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. It seemed that he was trying to solve something but couldn't quite work it out. So he asked the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. "Tell me, O Prophet of Allah! I have many relatives and many friends whom I love, and whom I wish to care for and help. But I often find it difficult to decide which of them has the greatest claim upon me? Which of them should come first?" The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny replied immediately, "Your mother should come first and before all others." The man was very pleased to have this clear guidance from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. But of course there were all his other relatives and his friends, so he asked again: "And after my mother, who has the greatest claim upon me?" The Prophet Muhammad's, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny reply this second time surprised him. "Your mother!" he said again. The man wondered why the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny was repeating himself. Perhaps he had not spoken clearly, the man thought, so he asked the question again, "What I want to know is, after my mother, who has the greatest claim upon me? Again the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny said "your mother!" Your mother, your mother, your mother! The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny had now said it three times. Slowly, the man realized why he had done so. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny means that my mother is extremely important, so much so that my duty to her must be stressed over and over again. Even so, the man's thoughts ran on, "what about all the others I love and wish to care for?" Still uncertain and wanting to know more, he once again turned to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny and said, "and after my mother, who comes after her? Is there anyone besides her?" The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny then replied "after your mother, your father." And then? asked the man. "Then people who are nearest to you," said the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. In universal religion Islam, mother has three times more rights over her off springs than their father because of her significant and crucial role in their birth, brought-up and home education. In another hadith the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny has said: "Paradise lies at the feet of mothers." In other words Paradise awaits those who cherish and respect their mothers. The Muslim mother has consequently a great feeling of security about the type of care and consideration she can expect from her children when she reaches old age. As the verse of Noble Qur'an quoted above indicates, thankfulness to parents is linked with thankfulness to Allah, and a failure in either of these respects is indeed a major failure in one's religious duties. The principles of Islam made explicit in Noble Qur'an and hadith are belief and good conduct, and good conduct begins at home with one's closest relatives. A Westerner who has had close contact with a Muslim society cannot fail to be struck by the love and respect given to parents and the honour shown to old people in general, both men and women, as a direct application of these principles of Islam. Woman in Islam: Mother's order (Status of Mother in Islam, Islamic Mother, Muslim Mother) A mother's order is to be respected, even in comparison with Allah's command, on the condition that the action concerned does not fall within the imperative and obligatory injunction. An example of that is Jihad, in the way of Allah, or recommended prayers. "A man came in the presence of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny and said: I like to perform Jihad in the cause of Allah, but my mother is not at all inclined towards my doing so. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny replied: Go back and remain with your mother. I swear by the Lord that has sent me on a true mission that to remain with one's mother for one night (and serving her and doing good to her) is better than performing Jihad in the cause of Allah for a year." The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny said, "If you are performing recommended prayers and your father calls for you, do not break your prayers. But if your mother calls you, do break your prayers". The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny said: "A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the Creator."

  10. :) Every one of us wants to be a winner, but what is success" Does success mean amassing wealth, attaining leadership, adopting the profession of one"s choice, being popular, consolidating power, enjoying prestige, maximizing happiness, etc." Is the winner the one who leads a country, commands huge audiences, gets his way, wins elections, overcomes his adversaries, becomes a Nobel laureate, emerges as a sports icon, or becomes influential; or is it he whose children are educated in the best of educational institutions, excel in their careers and marry the choicest of spouses" The Holy Qur"an informs us: "Whoever is saved from the Fire and admitted to the Jannah, he indeed is successful."(3:185). It also says: "The greatest thing iS the Pleasure of Allah: that is the supreme success." (9:72) In another verse it mentions: "The real losers will be those who lose themselves, and their families, on the Day of Judgement. Ah, that is the manifest loss!" (39:15) These verses remind us of the reality that none of the aforementioned "successes" are truly successes unless a person is able to obtain the pleasure of Allah, avoid Hell and be granted admission into Jannah. The Prophet explained how insignificant, transient, and fleeting the experiences of this world are: "The most prosperous person of the world to be thrown in the Fire, will be brought on the Day of Judgement. He will be thrown into the fire for just enough time to let the Fire penetrate his body. Then he will be asked, O man, did you ever have good time in your life or enjoyed any bounties" He will respond, "By God, never, O Lord!" Similarly, a person to be entered into Jannah who had the most destitute life in the world will be brought. He will be placed into Jannah for a time long enough to be accustomed to its luxuries. The he will be asked, "O man! Have you ever experienced poverty or tough circumstances" " He will respond, "By God, O Lord, I have neither experienced poverty nor tough circumstances ever." (Muslim) Those who assume that only their claim to be Muslims will guarantee them true, complete and eternal success have baseless expectations of Allah. They must hold the true beliefs of Muslims and live their lives as Muslims. The Prophet said: "A wise person is he who judges himself and works for the life after death. And the loser is he who follows his desires and then expects to be rewarded by Allah." (Tirmidhi) Jazak ALLAH kheiran....
  11. Asalamoalykum :) Where is the greatest love of your life? Where do you lavish most of your affection and attention? Is it your wife, your husband, your child, your parents, your beautiful home, your nice car, your studies, your job, your hobby or sport? Is your most beloved person or activity, the most deserving of your love? And, very important, is your love reciprocated, or are you in an emotional One-way-street? These questions hold the key to our success in this world and the life hereafter. What am I talking about? - I'm talking about love reciprocated; love that’s given, and love that’s returned. I have no doubt in my mind that every one of us here has felt the power and influence of love, in its many different forms, throughout our lifetime. We first experienced love at the very moment of birth. Seeing their newborn baby, our parents must have felt so much joy and gratitude to Allah. With our mother’s warm embrace and that very first drink of our mother’s milk, we must have looked up at her face, feeling her love and security as she gazed down, exuding love and satisfaction. From the first few minutes of life, we were enjoying our parents’ love; at the same time we were showing them our love in return. As we grew up, we continued to love and be loved by our parents, but then, our relationships expanded horizontally and vertically. We now enjoy the love of brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts, friends and wider relations. In time, we become parents and later, grandparents, and so the story of love moves on in ever widening circles, and repeating itself infinitely. The most important point about love is that it needs to be rewarded, returned, and reciprocated. This is the essence of love, that it is given and received, in equal measure. When love is given but not reciprocated, then it is as if a big light has gone out in our lives. Love always needs to be returned, to find completeness and fulfilment within itself. This is not a one-way street. No one enjoys loving, and not being loved. Can you imagine for a moment what it must be like to love someone, and not to be loved in return? Unreciprocated love, Love without love returned, leaves a sense of despair, depression, unworthiness, hollowness and emptiness. Love needs love, and love deserves love to enrich and complete itself. To love and to be loved puts meaning and value into our lives. Now think for a moment, as we sit here, that we are also enjoying a love of a different, deeper and yet subtler kind: the Divine love of the Creator for His creation. None of us can doubt that Allah, loves us. Whether we are tall or short, fat or thin, black or white, Muslim, Jew, Hindu or Christian, our Creator’s love and provision reaches us all, and we owe Him a debt of gratitude. His sustenance reaches even those who deny His existence, even those who disbelieve in Him. We depend so completely on Allah, and we owe him everything. He deserves our thanks, our obedience and worship. How do we show our gratitude to Allah? How do we show gratitude to anyone who has authority over us? At the very least, we show respect and obedience. The best way to show gratitude to our Allah, is to worship him, to obey him and to avoid displeasing Him. This is how we can reciprocate the divine love, to the One Who gave us life, and Who sustains us for every moment of our lives. If we can accept that love must always be rewarded, should we not then return the greatest of all loves, the unselfish love of Allah? Just think about it. How does it feel when you’ve shown love, kindness and generosity to someone, and your reward is rudeness, ingratitude or indifference! Do you know the feeling? When someone repays your kindness with cruelty. Doesn't it make you hurt and sad? Doesn’t it make you feel angry? Why then, should Allah not be angry towards those who repay His love with disobedience, ingratitude and disbelief? I would like to remind myself and you, about the secret of true love and true happiness. It is not simply to indulge the object of our love, leaving Allah aside, or to place our love for Allah right at the end of the queue. The way to real happiness is to place our love for Allah at the centre of our lives. Our love for Allah must be greater than any other love. It must come before our love for anyone or anything else. In fact, we only have the capacity to love and care for someone, because Allah gave us that capacity in the first place! Allah alone is the creator and author and facilitator of all love. Therefore, it follows that the first and most deserving love, should be our love for Allah. When we love Allah first, we give meaning, and purpose and balance and harmony to every other aspect of our life. In Surah Al-Baqarah, we read: “And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allâh as rivals (to Allâh). They love them as they love Allâh. But those who believe, love Allâh more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allâh and that Allâh is Severe in punishment.'' [2: 165] Look what happens when we fail to put our love for our Creator at the top of our agenda: Our loving nature loses its sense of proportion. It loses direction. Excessive love for oneself then becomes vanity, conceit and egotism. Excessive love for one’s community or race becomes bigotry and racism, and excessive love for one’s nation becomes arrogant Nationalism, or Fascism. Zionism, like Nazism and Apartheid before it, is a distorted Nationalism pretending to be a respectable political idea. It is only the Love of Allah that brings proportion and harmony to life, and illuminates all our other loves and relationships. If we can all remember this and live by it, we will go a long way towards making our lives happier and more meaningful. So How do we begin to place our love for Allah at the centre of our lives, at the top of our priority love-list? The short answer is Dhikr, the constant Remembrance of Allah. Dhikr is not just an optional thing we do after completing Salah. Dhikr is an integral part of Islamic worship. Remembering Allah must become a way of life. It is only through constant remembrance of Allah that human hearts will find true happiness and satisfaction, in good times and in times of distress. There is a beautiful verse in Surah Al-Ra’d that confirms this: “Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allâh, Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest.'' [Al-Ra'd, 28] We should train ourselves to be Allah-conscious during every waking moment. We should memorize and recite the Asma-ul-husna, the Beautiful Names of Allah, with every breath and every heartbeat. We can at least think consciously of pleasing Allah, and avoiding His displeasure, every time we make a decision or start an action. We must constantly ask ourselves, why am I doing this? Is this decision, this action going to bring me closer to Allah? Or, is this decision, this action going to arouse Allah’s anger? If we do this exercise regularly, consistently, this attitude will transform our lives at the most basic level. Seeking to please Allah, instead of seeking to satisfy our own lusts, will transform us from mere humans beings, wandering aimlessly, to the true Believers that we Muslims ought to be. We must expect the going to be difficult at first, because this is a major turning point in our lives. But if we persist in our efforts, and we are patient, we will, in time, inshAllah reap the rewards of returning Allah’s love with our love and obedience. My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam, Let us ask Allah to make us all worthy and deserving of His love. Let us make the effort, and seek Allah’s help, in completing the circle of love given and love returned. Let us show the Creator of love, that we have worked hard to bring our free will, and our heart’s desires back into alignment with Him, the way He created our true nature before we were exposed to temptation. Let us teach our children that the way to live successfully is to recognise Allah’s loving hand in everything we see around us, and to return that love with every good thought, every good word and every good action in our lives. O Allah, help us to purify ourselves in body, mind, heart and spirit. Help us to seek and find your good pleasure. O Allah, remember us in the company of Your beloved friends.... Ameen.

  13. Asalamu'alaikum The super-rich, middle-class and the poverty-stricken — all have existed in every era. Allah Ta’ala has distributed sustenance to people according to His infinite wisdom by giving some more than others. This distribution is a test for every individual. Those with less have been taught to turn to Allah Ta’ala alone for their needs. The wealthy have been exhorted to spend their Allah-given wealth for their needs and in the cause of Deen — including assisting the less fortunate servants of Allah Ta’ala. While Islam has not prohibited a person from living comfortably if he can afford to do so, the general mindset that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) created in the Sahaaba (R.A.) was that of abstinence from luxuries. This lesson was taught to the Sahaaba (R.A.) by means of his practical example as well as verbal exhortation. CHOOSE POVERTY Indeed, Allah Ta’ala had offered to turn the mountains into gold for Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Yet the life he chose was one where, on many occasions, there was nothing available to eat in any of the homes of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He was greatly annoyed when some of his wives indicated that they would like to have some increase in their allowances. As an admonition upon even this casual request, he remained away from them for an entire month. He eventually bade farewell to this temporary abode while there was not even sufficient oil in his home to light a lamp!!! While Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) adopted simplicity himself, he stressed the same for the Sahaaba (R.A.) as well. When Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) dispatched Sayyidina Mu’az bin Jabal (R.A.) as the governor of Yemen, he gave him several advises among which was: “Beware of hankering after comforts and luxuries for verily the true servants of Allah Ta’ala are not self-indulgent.” Once the Sahaaba (R.A.) were discussing some worldly aspects. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) addressed them and said: “Will you not listen? Will you not listen? Will you not listen? Verily simplicity is a part of Imaan. Verily simplicity is a part of Imaan. Verily simplicity is a part of Imaan” (Abu Dawood). The lesson of simplicity and abstinence was so deeply entrenched in the hearts of the Sahaaba (R.A.) that despite the fact that some of them owned much wealth, they lived a life of complete simplicity, spending their wealth on others and in the other avenues of Deen. Once Hazrat Umar (R.A.) was partaking of his meal. Hafs bin Abil’as was sitting with him but not eating. Hazrat Umar (R.A.) enquired as to why he was not partaking of the food. He excused himself by saying that the food was very coarse and difficult to eat. He will return to his abode and eat the more luxurious food that was prepared for him. Upon this Hazrat Umar remarked: “Do you think that I am unable to give the command that a sheep be slaughtered for me, be skinned (and cooked); that flour be finely sieved and thinly baked breads be prepared therefrom; that raisins be mixed with butter-fat and water and mixed to a fine texture (a kind of desert eaten in those days)?” Hearing this Hazrat Hafs (R.A.) replied: “I see that you are acquainted with the luxuries of life?” Hazrat Umar (R. A.) remarked: “Yes! Had it not been for the fear that some of my good deeds would be decreased on the Day of Judgment, I would have joined you in your easy living” (Hayatus Sahaaba). While emulating the example of the Sahaaba (R.A.) in its entirety is not an easy task, nor are we capable of doing so, we nevertheless must always keep in mind the abstinence in their lives. This will help to bring some degree of simplicity in our lives. SUFFER CONSEQUENCES Indeed, we need to adopt simplicity, or else we will suffer the consequences. Abandoning simplicity will result in one forever hankering after luxuries. As a result, contentment will be totally lost. People will attempt to “keep up with the Jones’s.” While the poor and middle-class will be aspiring to have the luxuries that their wealthy neighbours have, the wealthy will be forever looking for the “latest” and the “ultimate” luxuries. This quest then continues until death suddenly overtakes the person. In the last moments of life a person wishes that he had spent more time and energy in seeking the everlasting comforts and luxuries of the Hereafter. Alas, at that time it is too late to lament. SOCIAL PROBLEMS This attempt to keep up with what others have leads to many other sins and social problems. If one cannot afford what others have, one will even incur the curse of borrowing on interest to acquire the desired luxury. What one does, or acquires, is dictated by what others have or what “they” do. A financially hard-pressed father complained that he was battling to provide a daily allowance of R10.00 for his school-going teenage child. The source of the problem was that the “other” children at school did not bring lunch to school. Rather they queued up at the tuck shop to buy their snacks. Hence this child was embarrassed to take lunch from home, which would be far more cost effective, and be the “odd one out.” Similarly, several parents have mentioned that their teenage children have demanded that they be picked up from school in the luxury family vehicle, not the “cheap” family car. FASHION CONSCIOUS Another consequence of abandoning simplicity is that one becomes fashion conscious. Hence as the fashions rapidly keep changing, so will one’s expenses escalate. However, the greatest tragedy of following fashion is that such a person drifts further and further away from the Sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). What harm can be greater than this? An aspect of extreme concern is the colossal amounts that are squandered due to abandoning simplicity on the occasions of Nikah. Merely to make the occasion a “memorable event” and a “talk of the town,” huge amounts are spent on fancy frills and lavish arrangements. While simplicity has been encouraged in all aspects, it has been especially emphasised in Nikah. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is reported to have said: “Verily that Nikah will have the greatest barakah wherein the least expenses were incurred” (Mishkaat). Abandoning simplicity in Nikah is a sure way of depriving oneself of the barakah (blessings), which every marriage requires so desperately. Apart from the above, the minimum degree of simplicity that can be easily adopted is that such luxuries should be forsaken which cost a fortune yet hardly any tangible benefit can be obtained therefrom. The savings can be passed on to those who are less fortunate. Consider the following examples: FUTILE BENEFITS A four-cylinder luxury vehicle costs approximately R300 000.00. Exactly the same vehicle, with all the same features and comforts, but with a six-cylinder engine, costs approximately R100 000.00 more. This excess is for the additional power of the engine. However, the only “benefit” of this additional power is the cheap thrill that one may get on some rare occasion when driving the vehicle at dangerously high, illegal speed! Such “luxuries” are a sheer waste. Merely the savings would purchase a year’s bus fare for dozens of poor children who walk to school! Likewise, consider the “homes” we build within our homes — homes for glassware, plasticware, cans of beans, etc. These “homes” commonly known as built-in-cupboards do serve a purpose. Hence if one can afford to install better quality cupboards, it is permissible to do so, since there is no compulsion on purchasing the cheapest quality. However, as one progresses up the quality grades, the price difference between the best and second best amounts to tens of thousands of Rands. Yet both will last a lifetime. Both are of a luxurious quality. The best perhaps glitters a little more — and has the label of the best. This is hardly any “benefit” worthy of consideration. Despite being able to afford the best, if one settled for the second best, the savings on the homes for cans of beans would have built many basic shelters for homeless human beings!!! Similarly, one would barely notice the difference of the softness between the seven shield and five shield quality carpets. However, the savings would buy soft shoes for many shoeless servants of Allah Ta’ala. These are just a few examples. One can extend this to various other day-to-day aspects in one’s life. In short, while enjoying the Halaal bounties of Allah Ta’ala, the path of moderation and simplicity must not be forsaken. May Allah Ta’ala imbue us with His love and save us from the love of the world. Ameen.
